BEAUTY: WHAT IS IT, ANYWAY?

was browsing through Quora the other day and found a category of questions on Beauty. And this list of questions really made me think hard. What have we converted “Beauty” into these days.

Let’s start with the basic perception that most of us have about a typically beautiful person in India. If I ask you to imagine a beautiful Indian woman, who would you imagine? Aishwarya Rai? Aaliya Bhat? Katrina Kaif? Deepika Padukone? These are the answers you’ll find the majority of the people mumbling. Give and take a few persons. We are talking majority here. Now, go back to this list and see a trend. These are women who are conventionally attractive. Smooth skin. Bright eyes. Well made up faces 99% of the times when they even claim to be bare faced and natural looking. Are these regular women? No. These are women whose profession demands them to look a certain way. And they are out there to please eyes. Hence, they are bound to be “beautiful”. And since these are the popular faces which are bombarded at us from every billboard, social media, advertisement and movie trailer, it becomes fairly normal for the human mind to start perceiving this as the ONLY definition of beautiful.

Coming to terms with the fact that a lot of women aspire to look and dress up like these beautiful women. Why? Because the conventions that we already have about how a beautiful woman should look like. Let’s talk about what the standards of beauty are for an Indian woman. A woman who is fair as a river of milk, whose underarms are even fairer, whose arms and legs are free of hair, whose eyebrows are always shaped perfectly, whose clothes are from the latest season, whose tummy is as flat as the flat 42″ TV she watches, but no, those large digits are suitable only for televisions. If your waist is anywhere above 30, you are screamed and shouted at from every imaginable source to shove down mug after mug of hot green tea which will melt away those love handles and give you a tummy as flat as that of Shraddha Kapoor. Hahaha. Now, are you getting my point? These are media-propagated perceptions of beauty. Because every big brand wants to grab your attention and wants you to give your hard earned money to them so that they can provide you with a bit of their product that will make you look and feel beautiful. But. And this is a big but (Propagators of green tea, thankfully we are not talking of a big butt :P). We always forget that it is these brands themselves who have fed us the image of beauty that they want to sell us.

And those who fall away from these narrow standards have been made to feel, at least once in their lives, if not more times, inadequate. Not beautiful. Even ugly. Haven’t we seen enough cases of dark women who were made to feel impure, asked to rub ubtan after ubtan to clear up their complexion, who never thought twice before buying themselves several categories of fairness products? These women are not fictitious women. These can be found in your own homes, in the form of your mother, sister, wife or cousin. It’s that common a phenomenon. And why only women. Even men have their fair share (pun intended) of fairness products now. And lo-and-behold, the latest fad doing rounds these days are, hold your breath, vaginal whitening creams. Slow applause. Because we had run out of places in the woman’s body to whiten.

Just close your eyes for a minute and think. Are we that stupid? How come we have been that stupid? How come we have never realized these things till now? Do we really need to please so many eyes? What are we achieving by making generation after generation of people with low self esteems and even lower morale? Why is it that we let the media influence our eyes so much? Why is it still so hard for us to let go of these conventions and just clearly get used to a bigger variety of beautiful? If we have embraced globalization so wholeheartedly in our trade and commerce and our brand choices, why can’t we as easily open our arms and hearts to a bigger definition of beauty?

Why do our memes always make fun of the large-lipped full bodied black woman? Why do we find a woman with a hint of hair on her arms disgusting? Why do fat humans have to suffer so much shame and lame talks everywhere? And to top it all, why are fat people portrayed as stupid by the popular media? Isn’t it strange that only a certain body type is sold to us as desirable, while a 100 other body types are just NOT portrayed in the media? Don’t you think it’s a trick? Because they know that the majority of the people DON’T look like this. And they know that the majority of the people will keep paying them money to be able to look like this. Now do you understand? They are clearly feeding off our insecurities. And we happily keep obliging. Because, who has the time to think?!

Now, going back to my main question. What is beauty, anyway? So let me answer this simply. Beauty is a way to sell us products and services and everything imaginable that is sold in this world. Every brand has a face attached to it. Most often, it’s a face the majority of the humans will find pleasing to look at. Beauty, hence, is a modern myth. Till the educated human being helps break the conventional image of beauty and starts accepting the broad variety that exists in the human form. Till that time, beauty is something whose parameters will remain between two fixed, firm lines, sometimes budging a millimeter here or there, but not more.

THE BODY SHOP STRAWBERRY LIP BUTTER REVIEW, PRICE, BUY ONLINE INDIA

Did you know, strawberries are technically NOT BERRIES?! While bananas and watermelons are, scientifically speaking, BERRIES! Turns out that to qualify as a berry, a fruit needs to have 2 or more seeds, so a strawberry, which proudly calls itself a StrawBERRY, isn’t even a berry. Confirming the age old saying of “What’s in a name!” Whatever the scientific definition may be, I would remain just as faithful to you, my dear glistening, squishy strawberries! I would always pick you for my smoothies, and nearly always pick you for froyo (but please don’t expect loyalty when it comes to ice cream, you know it’s not really you there, but your evil, artificial flavour :P). But, I would still pick you for my lip products because you are a safe bet! Like I did when I got The Body Shop Strawberry Lip Butter!

Product Description and Claims: Taken from TBS website

Instantly hydrate and soften your lips with this fruity lip butter. Full of sweetly scented strawberry seed oil it will keep you coming back for more.

Lip butter

  • Nourishes & softens lips
  • Gives lips a light, natural-looking sheen
  • Leaves lips soft and smooth
  • Delicious fruity scent
  • Cold-pressed strawberry seed oil

Ingredients and Chemistry:

Butyrospermum Parkii Butter/Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (Skin Conditioning Agent – Emollient), Ricinus Communis Seed Oil/Ricinus Communis (Castor) Seed Oil (Emollient), Brassica Campestris/Aleurites Fordii Oil Copolymer (Skin-Conditioning Agent – Occlusive), Cera Alba/Beeswax (Emulsifier/Emollient), PEG-8 Beeswax (Emulsifier), Hydrogenated Castor Oil (Emollient), Aroma/Flavor (Flavoring Agent), Tocopheryl Acetate (Antioxidant), Ammonium Glycyrrhizate (Flavour), Fragaria Ananassa Seed Oil/Fragaria Ananassa (Strawberry) Seed Oil (Natural Additive), Tocopherol (Antioxidant), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster), CI 77891/Titanium Dioxide (Colorant), CI 45410/Red 28 Lake (Colorant), CI 19140/Yellow 5 Lake (Colorant).

Packaging: The Body Shop Strawberry Lip Butter comes in a miniature version of TBS’ large body butter pots, so it is pretty adorable looking! The plastic pot is a deep raspberry red/fuschia in color and the lid is black. Just like the body butter, it has an image of a gorgeous shiny strawberry on top, which actually makes it look quite inviting. The ingredients and other product details are mentioned on the bottom of the pot. Yes, pots are slightly inconvenient to use for lip balms but I am a sucker for cute little pots so I always end up buying pot packaged lip balms. Call it my obsession! For this particular lip butter, the packaging was one of the major factors that made me get this.

Color and Scent: The lip butter is a very very pale pink in color, almost like well made strawberry ice cream. Talking of strawberry ice cream, it smells just like that! It smells deliciously yummy, at least if you love the scent of strawberries. I do, and the smell made me completely adore this butter!

My Experience: The pot packaging does come with its issues of hygiene, but I never take chances and never use my hands with such packs, instead preferring to kiss the container instead! Till now, the level of product in the tub is high enough for me to kiss the contents and leaving enough product on my lips. But once the butter is used more, I’m afraid I would not be able to use it like this  Now coming to the effectiveness and texture of The Body Shop Strawberry Lip Butter, this feels just like real butter on the lips, albeit with the yummy scent of strawberries. Leave that aside and take a moment to appreciate that it EVEN TASTES LIKE STRAWBERRY CREAM! It is sweet and as yummy as it smells!! I am mostly licking it off my lips as soon as I apply it because of this sweet reason! Hence, it becomes one of the best romantic gifting options! Seriously, what could make your partner get more kiss-worthy than something so sweet, buttery and delicious?!

Talking of its moisturizing properties, it does immediately provide some moisture to the lips, but a couple of hours later, I find my lips getting quite dry, so I have to end up applying more and this goes on. Especially the edges of my lips feel particularly dry post applying this. That’s sad because I had really wanted this to work well for me…Plus, being loaded with a great amount of natural butters and oils (it even has castor oil!), it’s a shame this doesn’t work as well as it should. I guess you can’t get everything in the world. I had previously used TBS’ Chocomania lip butter and had faced similar moisturization troubles. But frankly, I am not as disappointed with The Body Shop Strawberry Lip Butter because its taste and smell more than makes up for its lack of divine moisturizing capabilities. I have tried this as a night time lip balm and it worked quite passably, so I guess I will end up using it one way or the other! Not a bad deal at all at Rs 250 (TBS has slashed the prices of some of its fast selling products such as shower gels, lip butters and some body lotions!)

Price: Rs 250 for 9 grams

FFS Rating: 3.75/5

Where to Buy: TBS stores across the world. You can buy The Body Shop Strawberry Lip Butter from Nykaa by clicking here.

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. The adorable red mini pot is a real eye catcher!
  2. The strawberryumilicious scent and flavour, plus it is sweet!
  3. Does provide some immediate moisture to the lips
  4. Not too expensive considering it leaves you with immediately kiss-worthy lips! Plus for the same reason, I recommend it as…
  5. …a great romantic gifting option for your partner!

CONs:

  1. Not extremely effective as a lip moisturizer as it leaves lips dry a couple of hours post application, so it quite defeats the purpose, no?
  2. The pot asks you to dip your hands into it, but yeah, you can use it like I do! Just kiss the damn thing! But after you’re halfway through, you will have to end up using your fingers…too bad!

Final Verdict: I like The Body Shop Strawberry Lip Butter a lot! Not love it, but like it enough to recommend because if you are a fan of great smelling (plus tasting!) lip balms like I am, you will definitely like to have your hands on this one. If however, efficacy is your keyword, you should give this one a pass!

IF LIP BALMS WERE SOULMATES! — LUSH HONEY TRAP LIP BALM REVIEW

FFS 10 Second Giveaway: Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm is a wonderfully effective lip balm with an oh-so-yummy authentic vanilla flavour and a delicious, natural sweetness. Needless to say, it is my lip balm soulmate.

There is simple, straightforward, no frills kind of love. The “I will eat only after you are here” kind of love. The silent “I’ve got you your favourite candy, you can find them by your bedside” kind of love. And then there is the mad, eat-me-all-up, drench-me-completely kind of love. The “I can’t breathe without you, imagine my life without you” kind of love. The “I can’t keep my hands off you” kind of love. Love is love. The only difference is the feeling it evokes in you. And how it inspires you.

All the talk about love was triggered by the love I feel for this product. There is no other single beauty product that I love as much as this little tin of wonder. To the point that this tin has been carried around so much that the labels are hard to read, scratchy and in states of shambles (sorry for pathetic product images, but just imagine what a remarkable product it would be to compel me to write such a review even after not being in a photogenic state!). Now hop on over to read more about my affair with this magical lip balm.

Product Description and Claims: The company website describes Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm as:

“Smooth on our delicious honey, white chocolate and vanilla lip balm and you’ll see why Honey Trap has captured the hearts of Lushies for years. A collection of deeply moisturizing ingredients like beeswax, fair trade shea butter, almond oil and organic wheatgerm oil work protect your pout while a gentle pepperminty tingle provides a subtle pick-me-up. Keep this one on hand for a serious dose of moisture or sweetness whenever you need it.”

Lush claims the product to be “lip nectar”!

Ingredients and Chemistry: See below for the chemical breakdown of Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm

Fair Trade Shea Butter (Butyrospermum parkii) (Skin conditioning agent), Almond Oil (Prunus dulcis) (Skin conditioning agent), Beeswax (Cera alba) (emulsifier), Honey (Skin conditioning agent), Organic Extra Virgin Olive Oil (Olea europaea) (Skin conditioning agent), Vegan White Chocolate (Cocoa Butter, Rice Syrup, Rice Starch, Rice Flour, Sugar) (Skin conditioning agent, flavouring agent), Glycerine (keeps skin hydrated), Flavor, Organic Cold Pressed Wheatgerm Oil (Triticum Vulgare) (Skin conditioning agent), Oatmeal (Avena Sativa) (skin protectant), Peppermint Oil (Mentha piperita) (flavour, skin conditioning agent) , Vanilla Absolute (Vanilla Planifolia) (flavour), Sweet Wild Orange Oil (Citrus sinensis) (flavour, skin conditioning agent), *Anise Alcohol (fragrance ingredient), *Benzyl Alcohol (fragrance ingredient, preservative),*Limonene (fragrance ingredient), *Linalool (fragrance ingredient), Alpha-Isomethyl Ionone . *Occurs naturally in essential oils

The formula of Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm is packed with skin conditioning agents and natural oils. The unique ingredients, I feel, are white chocolate and oatmeal.

Packaging: While people have concerns with tin and pot packing of lip balms, I am a sucker for these adorable packings! All Lush lip balms come in lovely, seemingly old fashioned tin pots. Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm variant comes with a pink colored label (which, you can see, has terribly faded and I have tried to color it back with some crayons..you know, in a fit of kiddish excitement that I was finally reviewing this lip balm!). I have read several reviews and people have complained that the tin pots are hard to open. However, I have faced no such issue and my tub is pretty easy to open. I have faced no issue with this packing, and I am pretty fond of this container. Also, people have apprehensions in using pot lip balms because of the hygiene factor. I am quite conscious of this too, and to overcome this problem, I, instead of dipping my fingers in the pot, kiss the contents of the tin  It’s an awkward way of using a lip balm and I have seen people shooting me the “is she crazy” kind of looks when I am busy kissing my lip balm pot, but I remain oblivious and continue!

Color, Scent and Flavor: The lip balm, in the pot, is deep honey-ish yellow colored (more like the color of frozen clarified butter, if you have seen that), while on the lips, it goes completely clear. Coming to the scent, it is heavenly. If I could, I would whip up a perfume for myself with the same notes and wear it every single day in the winters. It’s that good! Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm has a scent which is a mix of sweet vanilla and with a hit of chocolate, and some notes definitely coming from the orange oil that they have added. When I initially began to use it, I felt the balm sort of perfuming and spreading a beautiful aroma in my surroundings too! It is pretty strong and very pleasant. For me, it is extremely comforting too. It is the kind of scent that you can never forget once you have tasted and lived it. Apart from the unforgettable scent, it has an amazingly sweet flavour too! So, more often than not, I find myself licking it off my lips. It is delicious, and on this, I agree completely with Lush, that it does give you lips that can give “Honeyed white chocolate kisses”! If there is one romantic gift recommendation I can give to all the guys, it would be this lip balm for their girlfriends or partners. This stuff is magical!

Texture and Effectiveness: Sometimes, a product has wonderful scent and taste but turn out to be duds at doing what they are meant to do (something like Justin Biebers of lip balms, all glossy but all shitty). But this is what sets Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm apart from those all glossy products, because it really works wonders as a lip balm! First thing, you need a teeny weeny amount only, and it spreads on the lips like a dream. The texture is super buttery and feathery. It instantly drenches your lips in moisture, thus relieving any kind of chapping or dryness you may have. It does not feel at all cloying or unnatural. In fact, it settles comfortably into the skin, leaving your lips feeling protected and cushioned. Moreover, you will not need to re-apply for several hours (if you can resist licking it off!) It is wonderful as an overnight lip balm too, as I wake up with nourished and happy lips. So, all this makes it my lip balm soulmate.

The only problem I have with Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm is that in the Indian weather, I have found that the lip balm melts and the oils separate. And when it refreezes over and over, it tends to produce these tiny white granules into the lip balm, making it a little hard to use the product. To overcome this, I (in an ingenious stroke of idea), put the tin on a heated gridle, melted the whole damn thing, and allowed it to settle. This eliminated the problem of granules for a few days, but I have noticed them reappearing. Hence, this is a problem that others will encounter too.

Price: ~US$10. Which is slightly expensive. But I have used more expensive lip balms that were duds, plus I have used only about half of my container in about a year! It is super long-lasting, hence worth every penny.

FFS Rating:  10/5, it is absolutely the best lip balm that exists in the world. And this is being stated by a person who has seriously tried a lot of lip balms.

Where to Buy: Now this is the problem. You cannot buy this stuff in India. Lush shut it operations in India in 2013-14, and they have not reopened. It is available on Amazon for three or four times the original price. So, you can only get your hands on this crazily amazing product only if you have relatives or friends living abroad.

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. The supremely amazing scent
  2. Highly effective at healing chapped lips and protecting normal lips too
  3. Lasts long on the lips, does not need to be applied frequently
  4. Can be used under lipsticks, as it is clear
  5. A tin lasts ages as you need very little product
  6. Cute packing

CONs:

  1. Unavailability in India. Please Lush, come back to India, we are waiting for you!
  2. The product melts in hot weather, and resetting leaves these granules in the product. However, this does not affect the efficacy or safety of the product.

Final Verdict: THE. BEST. LIP. BALM. EVER. I will be buying Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm every time that I have the opportunity. Highly recommended.

Have you tried Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm? Were you as overjoyed as I have been? Comment!

THE BODY SHOP HEMP HAND PROTECTOR REVIEW, PRICE

FFS 10 Second GiveawayThe Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector is bad-smelling, but an unbelievably effective product that heals chapped hands in one night flat. Because you can’t really bear to use it during the day with that smell.

Being a skincare fanatic, hand creams, just like lip balms, are my favourite products. I just can’t resist getting hold of pretty-looking metallic tubes that promise healthy-looking hands! Though honestly, I end up using hand sanitizers more than the hand creams in my stash, because there’s a thing called laziness. I bought The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector ages ago (evident from the completely empty tube in the pictures) and now finally reviewing it.

Product Description and Claims: The Body Shop website describes The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector as below:

Our best-selling Hemp Hand Protector helps soften and protect hands. It is dermatologically tested for very dry skin and contains Community Trade hemp seed oil.

  • Heavy duty hydration
  • Relieves and protects
  • Restores moisture and suppleness
  • Enriched with community trade hemp from France

Ingredients and Chemistry:

Solvent: Aqua, Methyl Soyate

Humectant: Glycerin

Emulsifier: Cetearyl Alcohol, PEG-100 Stearate, Cera Alba

Skin Conditioning Agent: Cannabis Sativa Seed Oil, Ricinus Communis Seed Oil, Dimethicone, Myristyl Myristate, Glyceryl Stearate, Allantoin, Hydrogenated Castor Oil, C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate

Lubricant: Panthenol

Preservative: Phenoxyethanol, Sodium Benzoate, Potassium Sorbate, Disodium EDTA

Perfuming agent: Parfum

Miscellaneous: Citric Acid (buffering agent, solvent), Xanthan Gum (stabilizer, skin conditioner, emulsifier), Copernicia Cerifera Cera (emollient, stabilizer, film former), Talc (makes skin feel soft)

Skin texture enhancer: Retinyl Palmitate

Coloring agent: CI 77288, CI 77492, CI 77491, CI 77499

Packaging: TBS Hemp Hand Protector comes in a metallic tube, just like all its hand creams. I have the older packaging, which was made completely of metal (and hence, was hard to use as you reach the end of the tube because it is completely metallic, imagine a tube of Boroline). However, I dropped by in a TBS store recently and found that they have revived  the packaging of this hand cream too, so now it still remains metallic, but the tube also has some plastic to the metal making the tube softer and also, making it easier to press the tube. You can check out the images of Honeymania hand cream, because that is the stuff the new tube is made of now. TBS hand cream tubes are always travel friendly, as I have travelled with them far and wide. Some find it hard to use because of the tiny cap and all, but personally I like it.

Color and Scent: The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector is pale, herby green in color, and reminiscent of herby concoctions. Coming to the scent, it is the only bad thing about this product. I can describe it as medicinal, herby and peculiar. I tried using it initially at my place of work but the smell is quite strong and persists in even after washing hands, and I found it quite bothersome even though I am quite sturdy in terms of tolerating smells.

Texture, Effectiveness and My Experience: Coming to the texture, it is creamy and smooth, but completely non-oily, hence even if you do use it in your office, it won’t leave grease marks anywhere. You need only a very small quantity to cover your hands with enough product, and in these terms, it spreads very well. It leaves the hands immediately dreamily smooth and soft (note that these two terms are different and this cream helps in achieving both). I have used it on extremely dry hands as overnight hand protector and I found my hands pretty repaired the following morning. I would highly recommend The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector to anyone who works hard with their hands and need something solid and sturdy to protect them with. I feel the hemp oil is the magic ingredient here (and also the culprit for the odd odour) that heals the skin so well. Had the product not smelled so offensively bad, it would have been the only hand cream I would ever buy.

Price: Rs 850 for 100 ml of product

FFS Rating: 4/5 (deducting only 1 point despite the peculiar odour)

Where to Buy: TBS stores across the world

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. Highly effective
  2. Really heals dry hands
  3. Very small quantity needed per use
  4. Non-greasy and non-oily
  5. A tube lasts several months depending on how frequently you use it
  6. Remains effective even after a wash or two
  7. Travel friendly too

CONs:

  1. The smell is offensive!
  2. Somewhat expensive

Final Verdict: I will repurchase The Body Shop Hemp Hand Protector because no matter how it smells, this stuff works. Like magic.

FABINDIA DEW KIWI LIP BUTTER REVIEW, PRICE

Kiwis are unusual fruit. They are furry, fuzzy and quite odd-looking. But once you get beyond the exterior, you discover lush green juicy fruit, oozing flavour and loaded with vitamin and mineral. Plus it has those sour black seeds imparting a phenomenal texture and character to the entire being of the fruit. Almost like a human being, it has these gorgeous layers that you can discover as you delve deeper. Once you ponder these little things in life, life itself seems so much deeper and more meaningful!

Oh, by the way, we are talking about a Fabindia lip butter today, called Fabindia Dew Kiwi Lip Butter. It happens to be in a flavour of kiwi (or so they have tried, you will find out what I mean below…!). So, let’s find out if this product was as meaningful to me as the description of kiwi above!)

Product Description and Claims: The company has mentioned the following characteristics on the website for Fabindia Dew Kiwi Lip Butter:

  • Lip Butter
  • Round Box Packing
  • Natural
  • Mild
  • Spreads smoothly

Ingredients and Chemistry:

Castor Oil (skin conditioning agent), Octyldodecanol (emulsifier-an agent that helps keep watery and oily substances together in a stable state), Sorbitan Olivate (surfactant to help dissolve ingredients), Sunflower Oil (skin conditioning agent), Bees Wax (emulsifier), 2 Ethylhexyl Palmitate (lubricant), Microcrystalline Wax (emulsifier), Oliwax (skin conditioning agent, stabilizer), Shea Butter (skin conditioning agent), Almond Oil (skin conditioning agent), Emulsifying Wax (Emulsifier), Carnauba Wax (emulsifier), Kiwi Flavour (flavouring agent), Tocopheryl Acetate (Antioxidant, skin conditioning agent), Pentaerythrityl Tetra-Di-T-Butyl Hydroxyhydro Cinnamate (Antioxidant), CI 12740 (colorant), CI 61565 (colorant)

Packaging: Fabindia has recently revived the packaging of all its products to make them more modern looking. Though I do have the complaint that they have raised their prices very significantly post this change. The packaging of the lip balms have changed now to look sleeker and polished, while the old packaging looked quite plastic-y. The lid is metallic gold with a screw-on cap. I also like that there is a second lid to protect the product (being waxy and oily, lip balms have higher tendency of going rancid if exposed to air). The main container of Fabindia Dew Kiwi Lip Butter is a clear plastic tub. Yes, you may not like the tub as you have to dip fingers in, but this container is very “kiss friendly”! You can easily put your lips to the pot and have a decent quantity on your lips! The pot came packed within a cardboard and plastic packing.

Color, Scent and Flavour: I’m not a big fan of oddly colored lip products. See, if it is a pink or a red that is giving a pinky tint to my lips, it is serving some purpose. But I am not a fan of coloring a product just to justify the flavour! So the green colored lip balm puts me off. And coming to the other important factor, the scent, which has been named a “Dew Kiwi” had me having high expectations. But actually sniffing it made me only think of one thing: Poppins candy! That too, the horrible green colored ones! It smells nowhere close to a kiwi, rather smells estremely artificial and syrupy sweet. Not good, Fabindia! Though you guys have changed the packaging, you could have thought of improving the flavour that you have newly introduced! One saving factor for Fabindia Dew Kiwi Lip Butter is that it doesn’t have any significant flavour and the horrible scent doesn’t linger for more than a couple of minutes on your lips.

Texture and Effectiveness: Being hopeless on the color and scent, I had set low expectations from the lip balm on its performance. But to my surprise, it works pretty well! The formula of Fabindia Dew Kiwi Lip Butter is nice and comfortable, and not too waxy. I remember having used the old packaged Fruity Vanilla lip balm a few years ago and I remember that it was extremely waxy (almost like rubbing a candle on your lips!) and I hated the feel it had (and again, it had a horrible scent, so I guess they never really put a thought into the scents?!). But to my surprise, this one is quite decently moisturising and leaves lips soft and smooth. It could be attributed to the fact that this one has several types of natural oils in it, which balance out with the several waxes that they have included to have a smoother application. Overnight application has so far been helpful with this balm as my lips are not too chapped or hopelessly dry till now (having mostly used and checked this product during warmer months of the year), and this has helped me relieve this partial dryness. So I am not completely disappointed with my purchase (actually, my sister’s purchase, it was she who bought it, not me, I just hijacked it for reviewing purpose!) as I think we will still end up using it. The lip butter lasts about 2-3 hours on the lips, after which you may end up having to apply again.

Price: Rs 150 for 5 gms.

FFS Rating: 2.9/5

Where to Buy: All Fabindia outlets across.

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. Decently moisturizing
  2. cute pot packaging; the new gold lid looks classier, plus it has a second lid within to protect the product from getting oxidized
  3. Not very expensive (though now I remember, Fabindia used to give 10 grams of the product at this price earlier, while now it is half the quantity at the same price. Smart tactics!)

CONs:

  1. Horrible, horrible scent which is nowhere close to being that of a kiwi. Which now reminds me that Fabindia had a Dew Plum lip balm earlier which was green in color. And which now makes me think that they have just renamed the damn old thing to be a Dew Kiwi?! Is that so? Hmmmmm?
  2. The useless green color. No, I am happy with kiwi fragrance without a kiwi flavoured product being so artificially green, thank you very much! Plus, it doesn’t even smell like a kiwi!

Final Verdict: I find Fabindia Dew Kiwi Lip Butter an OKish product. I have used tons and tons of lip balms and this one would be somewhere in the middle of my “Pyramid of Recommendations”. It isn’t too awesome a product because I honestly don’t prefer such colored lip balms. But it does work fine as a lip balm, so I only recommend it to those who are fine with a Poppins scented lip balm! As for me, I will not buy it again, but will definitely use this pot.

THE BODY SHOP ARGAN OIL BODY BUTTER REVIEW, PRICE, BUY ONLINE INDIA

When I was young (not that I am old right now, but just remembering the 90s makes me feel like it was a different era! Nevermind) sweet almond oil used to be regarded as a magic potion. It was crazily expensive, and frankly, it was treated like liquid gold in the house. We didn’t dare waste any of it.

Argan oil is a 21st century version of almond oil, as it is just as expensive and touted to be as magical as almond oil once used to be. Hailed as an all-purpose, all healing oil, it is originally from Morocco, and is extracted from the seeds of argan tree. One can say that it is used in a manner similar to olive oil, which is used for culinary as well as cosmetic purposes.

Argan oil fever has gripped the world and left everyone enamoured with this golden liquid. The Body Shop launched the argan oil line a couple of years back. I, being the dry skinned maiden, wanted to try the entire range, but alas, I don’t have all the money in the world, so I settled on the body butter, as usual. And with the winters now setting in, it’s the best time to get yourself some body butter!

Product Description and Claims: TBS website makes the following claims about The Body Shop Argan Oil Body Butter:

Indulge in the most luxurious beauty ritual with this rich body moisturiser, enriched with Community Fair Trade argan oil from Morocco for dry skin. 24 hour hydration Leaves skin feeling soft and smooth Buttery texture.

Ingredients and Chemistry: You can check out the chemical properties of each ingredient of The Body Shop Argan Oil Body Butter in brackets:

Aqua/Water (Solvent), Butyrospermum Parkii Butter/Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea) Butter (Skin Conditioning Agent – Emollient), Theobroma Cacao Seed Butter/Theobroma Cacao (Cocoa) Seed Butter (Emollient), Glycerin (Humectant), Cetearyl Alcohol (Emulsifier), Glyceryl Stearate (Emulsifier), PEG-100 Stearate (Surfactant), Orbignya Oleifera Seed Oil (Emollient), C12-15 Alkyl Benzoate (Emollient), Ethylhexyl Palmitate (Skin Conditioning Agent), Cera Alba/Beeswax (Emulsifier/Emollient), Argania Spinosa Kernel Oil (Skin-Conditioning Agent), Dimethicone (Skin Conditioning Agent), Parfum/Fragrance (Fragrance), Caprylyl Glycol (Skin Conditioning Agent), Phenoxyethanol (Preservative), Xanthan Gum (Viscosity Modifier), Disodium EDTA (Chelating Agent), Sodium Hydroxide (pH Adjuster), Coumarin (Fragrance Ingredient), Citric Acid (pH Adjuster), CI 15985/Yellow 6 (Colorant), CI 19140/Yellow 5 (Colorant)

Packaging: Just like the rest of the TBS body butters, The Body Shop Argan Oil Body Butter also comes in a screw-on capped large tub of deep oily golden color. The lid has the image of a half-broken argan kernel oozing oil. All TBS art is pretty basic, but I find it very appealing! The jar is travel friendly and the packing is efficient as I am always able to use up every bit of the product. Once the jars are empty, I also use them to store knick knacks like small jewellery.

Color and Scent: The Body Shop Argan Oil Body Butter is a light creamy to nutty brown in color. It has a nutty, oily yet sweet aroma, which will make you think of pine nuts or roasted walnuts somehow. I associate this scent more with the cold weather, making this more of a winter-y body butter for me. On the body, the scent lasts for about 2-3 hours. Of course, it would last longer if you use more of the product or are in air-conditioned environment. I still use it in summers, because the scent is not too overpowering and not very evident a few minutes post application.

Texture and Effectiveness: This is one of the harder-in-texture body butters. The Body Shop Argan Oil Body Butter is lardy and seems like partly frozen butter. It spreads with some effort on the skin (well, unlike Moringa or Honeymania other fruity TBS body butters, which spread more easily). However, once it is all there, it leaves the skin pretty soft and moisturized. If you think that being an oil-based body butter, it would leave skin oily, then you can be assured that this is not the case as it leaves no such oily film on your body. Post using this, my skin feels well nourished for a good 24 hours, matching what the company claims.

However, I have not felt any remarkable difference in the body butter quality by the addition of argan oil. The thing is, if I buy strawberry body butter, it’s for the fact that I love strawberry scent. If I buy moringa, it is because I adore the perfume-y white floral scent. If I buy an argan oil product, it would be because I expect it to be more moisturizing. But sadly, it has not been the case with the product as I find that it offers similar moisturization as the other body butters. That is the only let-downer. Otherwise it is as good as other TBS butters, which have now become a staple in my vanity (just like Amul butter in my refrigerator!)

Price: Rs 1150 for 200 ml. TBS has been raising the prices almost every year, which is making these more expensive! I always recommend buying the staples during their online sales, as one can easily avail at least 25-30% discount.

FFS Rating: 4/5

Though this does what it claims, this is not my favourite TBS body butter. That spot is still retained by honeymania and moringa, which thoroughly perfume the body, apart from enveloping the skin in tons of moisture!

Where to Buy: TBS stores across the world, and also TBS online. You can buy it in India by clicking here.

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. Just like other TBS butters, this is great food for dry skin
  2. Huge quantity, and you need a very little to keep you covered
  3. The tub is easy to use, leak-proof and travel friendly
  4. Has the goodness of shea and cocoa butters, which are full of great fatty acids that are amazing for the skin
  5. I love TBS philosophy of cruelty-free and fair trade practices

CONs:

  1. Expensive at 1150 rupees, despite that fact that a tub can last you 2-3 months (or more) with regular usage too. Hence, always recommend you to buy and stock up during sale.
  2. The scent is unique but not my favourite.
  3. Argan oil doesn’t feature among the top 10 ingredients, and for me, it makes argan oil a minor ingredient of the formula, not doing any wonders for my dry skin

Final Verdict: If you want to pick an argan oil product just because the whole world is going gaga over it, don’t expect miracles out of The Body Shop Argan Oil Body Butter. However, if you are on the lookout for a good body butter, you can pick this one. However, it is pretty much like the rest of TBS core ranges of body butters and just as good, not extraordinarily unique or efficacious due to the addition of argan oil.

IMPORTANCE OF BEAUTY AND SELF CARE FOR MENTAL HEALTH AND WELL-BEING

Have you had phases or series of days when you didn’t feel like bathing, moisturizing your dry skin, shaving, or cutting your nails despite knowing you need to? Do you know of people who have recently lost the urge to do anything for the good of their body? Are you constantly on the run and forgetting to take care of the five senses that you are blessed with? Then you will get to reflect on this today as I talk about the significance of different forms of beauty routines and self care practices for our mental wellbeing.

What does self care and beauty routines mean in this context?

Well, it refers to simple acts that you do just for the sake of your body. It may include taking care of your skin, applying that lipstick to make you feel good, doing that head massage to relax, ranging to more diverse and bigger things, such as doing yoga, breathing fresh air in the morning, taking enough sleep and rest when tired, listening to some calming or peppy music, keeping yourself well fed and nourished, having that steaming cup of green tea, enjoying a long, hot bath and so on. Any act that gives you time with your own self, often resulting in something which is good for the body, can be covered under the realm of self care. Grooming and beautification is also a part of self care, and this category of self care helps boost our confidence, and generally gives us a good feeling about ourselves. What one considers as self care can vary between individuals, but the essence remains the same: to feed your five senses, taking care of your body, giving it time to revive, and experiencing the sensations that your five senses provide you.

Now, I will tell you why self care is important for your mental health, for the soul and your overall wellbeing, and not merely your body.

  1. Body is the vessel for your soul. And the body is a large part of our existence.

Who are we? We are souls mounted on bodies made of flesh, gifted with a mind to control the workings of this vessel made of cells and organs. Hence, taking care of this large machinery falls into our own hands. Eating good food, sleeping well, keeping warm and healthy, right to smaller things such as wearing makeup to keep our confidence high, all of it is necessary for a human machinery to work well.

  1. Taking care of your body makes you feel more in control

A calm moment with yourself in the middle of hectic workdays makes you take charge of situations in a more controlled way. So deeply sniff that cup of roasted Arabica coffee at your desk, keep your mind off emails, apply some lotion on your dry elbows and you will feel your soul back in its place. Some minutes doing an activity that provides good feelings to your senses help you regain balance and be better at whatever it is that you are doing.

  1. Self care provides meaning to all that you do for a living

Why do we get up early in the morning, get stuck in traffics to reach the workplace, work hard throughout the day and earn that money? No, definitely not merely to go out to shop, buy groceries and send kids to school. You earn to be able to take care of your body through which you have to achieve many more things in life. Taking that deep breath in the park in the morning, applying that happy red nail paint, smelling those white jasmines in the garden, if you aren’t doing all this despite earning the money, what are you living for?

  1. Mental wellbeing stems from the confidence that you derive after looking and feeling good

It is quite well accepted that looking good does affect our perception towards ourselves. It becomes quite obvious then, that you spend some minutes each day dressing up that body properly, looking and feeling your best in order to give your best.

  1. Gives you the bigger picture and bigger goals for life

Imagine you don’t give yourself those moments with yourself. You may eventually end up losing yourself in the rat race because you don’t know why you work so hard, why you struggle with office politics, why you give your best despite not being promoted. If you spend some time with yourself, taking care of your own needs every single day in some way, you will have your priorities right. Then you can easily see the bigger picture and your own place in that picture.

  1. Mentally tiring work of the present times makes one lose sense of self

Our generation is the one in which we work with our minds, not with our hands. We spend increasingly greater time stuck to pixelated screens, which in the long run causes us to lose the connection between mind and body. We remain lost in virtual realities, thus losing sense of the real reality. The calm moments that we devote to our bodies are indispensable so that we retain some contact with reality. Throw that phone aside for some moments to sit idle and do something for your body. It will thank you for this.

Doing some acts of self care every single day makes you feel more human, hence makes you feel more capable and more alive. It is necessary that you take care of what your body needs (food, sleep, rest, warmth, care and so on) by providing it timely and amply so that it gives you back, in terms of hard work, good attitude and freedom from diseases and stress.

So go ahead and indulge yourself in those moments of pure bliss. Breathe deep, do some form of exercise or meditation as often as you can, take those extra minutes getting ready, wear that mascara, sit idle while massaging oil into your hair, listen to the raindrops splattering on the windows, and feel yourself coming alive. You need it. After all, you are alive!

Have you read my piece on the importance of making sense of our work? If you haven’t, you should!

THE UNISEX GUIDE TO HEALTHY FEET

I would say feet are one of the most pitiable parts of body we have. They handle all our weight, take us places, make us run, walk and dance, but we rarely think about them till  the time they get a painful sprain, cracked heels or fungal infections. Healthy feet are as important for overall well-being as healthy skin or hands. Hence, I compile a guide to healthy feet: a list of things that should be done by all of us, men and women, to care for our feet: the support infrastructure of our bodies

  1. Never wear socks on wet or damp feet: It is very important to never wear socks on feet that have any kind of moisture or dampness as it can lead to fungal infection. Wait for feet to be thoroughly dry before wearing socks.
  1. For foot odour: All of us suffer from it. Change socks everyday. Wash your socks in disinfectant. As mentioned, never wear socks on wet feet. Rotate your shoes, as wearing the same shoes everyday will not allow your shoes to dry thoroughly. A teaspoon of baking powder helps absorb the odours from the “victim” shoes.
  1. For fungal infection: I would not comment on the kind of ointment you should apply, but there are some over the counter ones available for simple fungal infections. What is most preferable in case of fungal infection on feet is wearing open shoes or flip flops so that your feet remain dry and airy, as that would aid the quick elimination of infection.
  1. During monsoon and rains: You should wear waterproof footwear and completely avoid cloth, canvas or fabric shoes because once wet, they will remain wet throughout the day, leading to infection and odour. It is recommended to wear plastic sandals that allow water to pass through, plus you can remove them so that they dry. What I also suggest is, do not walk barefoot on the grass if you have any kind of foot infection or cracked heels, especially during rainy weather because it may aggravate the infection. Plus, who wants the creepy crawlies that poke out from the mud in the rains on their skin?!
  1. For cracked heels: use coconut or olive oil everyday. Having suffered endlessly from heels that never heal (bad pun, or good, I don’t know) I have tried hundreds of creams and lotions and salves, but nothing works better than slathering coconut or olive oil on the cracky mess and in a week, what you have is a complete face-lift of your heels!
  1. For calluses: If you suffer from calluses regularly, chances are that there is a problem with the type of shoes you are wearing (too flat, or with too much exposure, or simply ill-fitting and low on support). Hence, it is a good idea to buy better footwear. Also, you might be standing for far too long. It is recommended to use some oil on your feet every night and scrub the skin once or twice a week. Using oil helps the calluses soften and hence helps easy removal of hardened skin.
  1. Instruments for keeping feet clean: This includes nail cutters, manicure/pedicure tools and scrubbing tools, which should be washed and sterilized thoroughly prior to use. I would suggest to not keep these tools in the bathroom as they tend to remain wet and hence, more prone to germs. It is better to keep them dry. I try to wash these tools with Dettol or some antiseptic liquid before and after use, so you could do that too.
  1. Wearing heels or uncomfortable footwear: Yes, you may say, just stop wearing those if they cause so much pain! But we do have to wear those uncomfortable shoes on some days (although I hardly wear heels myself). On occasions when it is completely unavoidable, it is great to carry a spare pair of footwear in your bag and change into heels only when required. Plus, change back to your comfy flats when you are through that interview or shaadi.
  1. Nails: Keep them trimmed and a couple of times in a month, clean them thoroughly. Plus, if you wear nail paint often, I suggest going bare for a week once every month or so to make your nails breathe and stay healthy.

Love your feet, and take enough care of them. They deserve a lot of your love.

L’OREAL HAIR SPA DEEP NOURISHING CREAMBATH REVIEW

Like everyone, I have a love-hate relationship with my hair. Mostly hate. Some days I love it, while on others, I feel like going bald. But I have a thing for long hair, hence I never cut it beyond a certain length  I try to take care of it (well, only occasionally), and on the days I do, I slather on a palm-ful of oil on my scalp and a generous amount on the ends before I shampoo. I suffer from terrible split ends (blame it on the hair dryer and sun) but don’t do much about it, well, because I’m lazy. So when my sister bought this gigantic tub of L’Oreal Hair Spa for herself, I showed her a greedy, toothy grin and she knew this was gone. But that’s what sisters are for, right?

Product Description and Claims: This is the product description for L’Oreal Hair Spa with Water Lily from L’Oreal website:

Enriched with Water Lily and purified water, this deep nourishing creambath intensely nourishes your hair both inside and out. Massaging your hair with the Deep Nourishing Creambath, deeply treats and engorges the fibers with nutrients and moisture for healthy, soft and shiny hair, full of life.

HAIR TYPE: Dry hair

RESULTS: Nourished, Rehydrated, Soft & shiny

INGREDIENTS: Water lily to nourish the hair and reveal shine.

Ingredients:

Water, Cetearyl Alcohol, Behentrimonium chloride, Cetyl esters, Amodimethicone, Phenoxyethanol, Isopropyl alcohol, Fragrance, Trideceth-6, Chlorhexidine dihydrochloride, Hexyl cinnamal, Benzyl salicylate, Linalool, Cetrimonium chloride, Butylphenyl methylpropional, Benzyl alcohol, Nymphaea alba flower extract, C163884/1

Packaging: L’Oreal Hair Spa comes in a large, aqua green colored tub with a silver lid. I haven’t travelled with it but it seems sturdy and travel friendly to me. Also, I like the fact that the wide mouthed jar makes it easy for me to spoon out a generous amount of the cream in one go.

Color and Scent: The creamy conditioner is pure white in color and has a sweet aquatic-floral scent to it which I adore! The scent seems pretty nice when you massage it in your hair. I feel that L’Oreal Hair Spa with Water Lily really justifies the name in terms of its fragrance!

My Overall Experience: So as I already told you, I stole it from my sister! we are an entire family of dry hair, so a product like this was given a warm welcome! I am pretty lazy when it comes to hair care. The most significant thing I do in the name of hair care is applying oil, which I already told you guys about, and more often, I forget that too. Hence, a good hair conditioner is something I need to make my hair look at the very least somewhat presentable. I have waist length hair.

The first time I used L’Oreal Hair Spa, I massaged a couple of palmfuls of the product through the entire length and scalp into shampooed and towel-dried hair. As instructed, I kept massaging the conditioner for a good 10-15 minutes and rinsed thoroughly. One thing: it takes shit load of water to get this out of your hair. I was standing in the shower for a good 5-8 minutes removing traces from my hair. The product is quite greasy and you will never know when it is completely rinsed off, hence all the more confusion. So I suggest that you do this hair spa when you have at least a decent 30-40 minutes for a bath.

When my hair was finally rinsed, it felt smoother and healthier to touch. I towel dried my hair and then, as usual, used the blow dryer. I found that L’Oreal Hair Spa Deep Nourishing Creambath left my hair quite shiny and remarkably soft! I was impressed and excited to use it the second time around too!

Next, I used it a couple of weeks later, but this time, I did a few changes in the application. First, I didn’t towel dry my hair before applying the product. Next, I didn’t massage it continuously, but just left it in my hair after an initial massage. Third, I didn’t blow dry my hair post washing. This time, my hair didn’t feel as great post using this product. In fact, I do better using a regular conditioner only. However, on both occasions, I felt that it helped get rid of scalp dryness sufficiently.

So, the take away points are:

  1. Use only as directed. Ensure you are massaging it continuously through your hair and scalp for at least 10 minutes. And yes, do this on towel dried hair, not on hair dripping water.
  2. Try blow drying your hair if you are going out somewhere, else your hair may end up feeling pretty regular despite doing this significant exercise.

I feel the experience I had at home using this product was better than professionally done hair spas because this came at a fraction of the cost! I feel L’Oreal Hair Spa is definitely worth it as you can end up saving several thousand rupees worth of treatment by just investing in a single tub of product which you can easily use in the comfort of your home (despite the website and the jar screaming that it is for salon use only! Ha Ha!)

Price: Rs 600 for 490 grams

FFS Rating: 4/5

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. Cost effective hair spa that you can do at home conveniently
  2. Leaves hair smooth and soft; shiny too if massaged well and rinsed off well
  3. Has a pleasant fragrance
  4. A tub can easily give more than 15-20 hair spa sessions
  5. Deals with scalp dryness well

CONs:

  1. Needs you to follow instructions well
  2. Super hard to rinse off as the product is quite greasy (but no, doesn’t leave the hair greasy if rinsed well)
  3. May or may not leave hair shiny

Final Verdict: Yes, I would recommend L’Oreal Hair Spa especially to the lazy bums like me who don’t care well enough for their dry hair. If you are taking enough care and loving your hair, then again, a hair spa is another feather in your hat! If you are a hair spa fanatic and get it done regularly at the salon, then this product is definitely for you.

BURT’S BEES VANILLA BEAN LIP BALM REVIEW, PRICE INDIA

My love for lip balms and anything with a vanilla fragrance is known to the ones close to me. This obsession grew and culminated into a collection of vanilla body polish, vanilla body butter, vanilla body mist and topped off with a vanilla lip balm (burp!). A sweet ending!

Vanilla is soothing to me. It reminds me of the good ol’ vanilla ice cream sticks that I used to hog as a little kid (the ones that we bought for a ridiculous amount of Rs. 2!) The scent is ingrained in my mind as a reminder of simpler days, when all I needed to remain happy was a synthetic vanilla flavoured dry cake after a meal, or a cup of snow-white vanilla ice cream that my mom used to buy for me at the end of every activity class I attended during summer vacations.

Scents are deeply personal, as one that may appeal to you may never appeal to me. Also, scents are time-bound. What may seem pleasant to you today may seem outrageously kiddish or strong some years down the line. Whatever it may be, but I am glad to be blessed with the olfactory receptors in my nose (and my brain) that capture memories in a vividly different way!

I get back to my lip balm reviews with a vanilla lip balm by Burt’s Bees, aptly called Burt’s Bees Vanilla Bean Lip Balm! Lip balms, as always, remain my most favourite products that I buy and store and forget about and discover some days later in a bag or a forgotten clutch, and then I get hooked again!

Product Description and Claims:

Burt’s Bees website puts the following description and claims for Burt’s Bees Vanilla Bean

“A luxuriously complex and comforting lip balm bursting with all-natural vanilla. Couple that with moisturizing Shea Butter and soothing Vitamin E, and you’ve got a true treat for happy lips.

  • Nourishes with Shea Butter and Antioxidant Rich Vitamin E
  • Complex Vanilla scent
  • 100% Natural”

It also mentions a couple of lines on the uniqueness of vanilla fragrance

“Some things are better with Vanilla.

Did you know that most vanilla flavors are not natural? Since the flowers only bloom for a single day, it takes a special hive of bees or hand pollination to harvest true, natural vanilla.”

Ingredients and Chemistry

Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, beeswax (cera alba), flavor (aroma ), ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, lanolin, ammonium glycyrrhizate, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, canola oil (huile de colza), glycine soja (soybean) oil, rosmarinus officinalis (rosemary) leaf extract, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter, tocopherol, vanilla planifolia fruit extract, vanilla tahitensis fruit extract

While it is pretty clear from the ingredients list what is what, I will try to break down below:

Moisturizing agents: Helianthus annuus (sunflower) seed oil, cocos nucifera (coconut) oil, beeswax (cera alba), ricinus communis (castor) seed oil, lanolin, butyrospermum parkii (shea) butter, canola oil (huile de colza), glycine soja (soybean) oil, theobroma cacao (cocoa) seed butter

Flavoring agent: Ammonium glycyrrhizate, vanilla planifolia fruit extract, vanilla tahitensis fruit extract

Antimicrobial agent: Rosemary leaf extract

Packaging: Like a typical Burt’s Bee lip balm, Burt’s Bees Vanilla Bean Lip Balm comes in a retractable tube of a honeycomb yellow color with a deep midnight blue colored cap. It is sturdy and snaps shut with a hard click. All the product details are mentioned on the pack. It is travel friendly and hygienic to use.

Color and Scent: This variant is white in color and goes clear on the lips, like regular Vaseline. The scent is what is the fight is all about! It is true to its name and completely reminds me of vanilla. I would go on to describe it as a milky vanilla aroma, which, for me, is quite comforting. This is what I seek in a flavoured lip balm, and I got it here! It still will not be my favourite vanilla lip balm (because you know, I have tonnes!). But I would recommend it if you are looking for a completely natural vanilla lip balm. To top it all, it is also slightly sweet in taste (definitely making you kissilicious!).

Texture and Effectiveness: It is light on the lips and leaves a very fine coating of the balm on the lips. It is quite comfortable and smooth. It does not leave your lips too glossy or shiny, making it fit for use by men also. The moisturization factor is just apt if your lips are not Sahara desert kind of dry. It heals minor chapping in a couple of days, so does get the thumbs up from me for the hydration part! It may feel a bit waxy to some as it obviously contains beeswax. But still, it is not cloying. With repeated use, I got used to its sensation and now find it quite comfortable and not waxy at all. It feels like you have a protective layer of something on your lips. Since I have used Burt’s Bees Vanilla Bean for a very long time and across several seasons, I found it lacking and inadequate during winters when my lips were drier, however, during Indian summers and monsoons, I kinda like it more (despite the tube being almost finished, I still reach out for it often!). So it becomes one of my favourite lip balms in summers, while it won’t be on my “To Buy” list in winters. I guess the temperature might be the culprit as winter coldness makes the waxes harder, making it difficult for enough product to deposit on the skin, while at normal temperatures, it does settle on the skin better, hence functioning better. All being said, I would say I do like it!

FFS Rating: 3.5/5 (major deduction because of availability issues and higher price in India. At $3.5 in the US, I would rate it a 4/5)

Price: I think it retails at Rs 450-500 in Sephora outlets. Online prices vary in India.

Where to Buy: Burt’s Bees Vanilla Bean Lip Balm is available in Sephora stores across India and some online portals.

PROs and CONs

PROs:

  1. The vanilla scent is pretty true to its name
  2. It is sweet! And could be pretty yummy kissing experience!
  3. Travel friendly tube
  4. Little goes a long way, a single coat is all you need normally
  5. 100% natural, with no preservatives or artificial colors
  6. Unisex lip balm, can be used by the men as it is free from glossy sheen (which men are not generally fond of…)
  7. Works adequately well during summers

CONs:

  1. Not easily available in India, you would have to go mall hopping to specific locations having Sephora
  2. Expensive! At ~Rs 500, it is one of the more expensive lip balms around at least in India.
  3. Not very effective during winters!
  4. Since it is only fit for day-time use hence, it lacks SPF

Final Verdict: Personally, I may buy it again but only if someone gets it for me from the US! I didn’t really find it worth Rs 500 or so (that’s ~2 times its US price). I would recommend you to buy it only if you are very fond of vanilla lip balms and want one with an authentic scent. The good thing is that it’s all natural and works in summers. Hence, you decide!

FABINDIA PASSION FLOWER BODY SPRAY REVIEW

Floral scents are my favourite family of fragrances. When I think of fragrances, the first thing I think of is a flower. Whenever I have to buy a fragrance, the first one I pick is always a white floral one. One could buy something musky, fruity or aquatic and there runs a risk of going wrong with it, but a floral perfume for me, can never go wrong.

The hot and musty summers of India make it mandatory to carry a perfume product at all times, pretty much because you never know when you are needed for a meeting, a presentation, or an impromptu date! Body mists are great in summers as a splash on the skin refreshes it and the scents obviously make us feel a lot more prepared to face a hot, sweltering day. Body sprays are also a good choice to carry in a bag as they come in plastic bottles, making them pretty travel friendly. So I bought Fabindia Passion Flower Body Spray some months ago (technically, for my sister for her birthday, but guess who ended up using more 🙂 ). I had earlier bought myself Fabindia Perfume Oils in Rose and Ylang Ylang, and pretty much loved both of them, and you can read their reviews here. Let’s talk about this product right away!

Product Description and Claims: Fabindia has made no claims regarding this product, all it gives out is the usage instructions, which you can see in the image.

Ingredients and Chemistry: This is the list of ingredients for Fabindia Passion Flower Body Spray. I am giving a brief chemistry of these agents:

Denatured Alcohol (solvent and astringent), DM Water (solvent), Fragrance (fragrant component), Propylene Glycol (solvent, helps keep skin hydrated), Colourants (to provide color to the product)

Packaging: The company has recently changed the packaging of all its products. Now, the fragrance mists come in opaque white bottles instead of the older transparent plastic bottles. Now, the product also has a picture of the passion flower, while the one I had was pretty no frills affair, with simply the product name on a pink colored label. The top has a white colored spray opening that needs to be pressed to use the mist. While I had no issues with the older packing too, I find the new one a bit sturdier. However, since the new packing is opaque, I feel it will just be somewhat difficult to determine how much product you are left with. Otherwise, I find the new packing as fine as the older one.

Color: The color of the product is pale pink, but it does not leave any color on the clothes. I am not sure about the product in the new packaging; however, I expect that the formulation will not have changed.

Scent: Well, I use body mists by spraying tons of product on my skin as well as my clothes. Body mists and sprays, as a rule, are dilute fragrance products which have low fragrance content, and ideally, must be used on the skin (but you know, how hard it is to use perfumes only on the skin when you know you will be sweating it off, making you spray it all over your clothes too!). I have used this particular body spray in a similar manner. Initially, the fragrance is somewhat alcoholic, just like any other body spray. When the alcohol evaporates, you are left with a fragrance very sweet and very floral. I cannot really describe whether it smells like a passion flower because I have not smelled one. However, it is definitely distinctly sweet, and may even seem somewhat artificial and saccharine. But it is strong enough to make your sweltering hot day somewhat pleasant.

Longevity: With a decent spray all over my clothes (count that as 5-8 spritzes), the fragrance lasts for 3-4 hours. Well, of course it depends on how much you sweat, or if you are sitting in an air conditioned office. My personal mantra is to apply fragrances on those parts of the clothes where there will be no contact with body sweat or body heat, making the fragrance last a bit longer. Even when I do that, I find that Fabindia Passion Flower Body Spray lasts about 4-5 hours max. In winters however, it has lasted upto 6-7 hours.

Price: I bought it for Rs 225 (100 ml). The new price is Rs 250 for the same quantity in the new packing.

FFS Rating:

Fragrance quality: 3/5 (I find it a bit artificial)

Longevity: 4/5

Overall rating: 3.5/5

Where to Buy: You can buy Fabindia Passion Flower Body Spray from any of the Fabindia outlets. You can also buy it online from Fabindia website by clicking here.

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. Cheap
  2. Travel friendly and very much, handbag friendly bottle! Even the new one I believe is as good as the old one.
  3. Refreshing floral scent, strong enough to beat summer blues
  4. Easily available in Fabindia outlets
  5. Decently long lasting for a body spray

CONs:

  1. The fragrance is a bit too artificial for my nose, and some may find it too sweet

Final Verdict: If you are looking for a product that can help you feel recharged in the sweltering summers, Fabindia Passion Flower Body Spray is a decent investment! It can instantly lift you up if your nose finds this fragrance pleasant.  Spray it on, on the go with the travel friendly bottle. Worth a try. I would call it one of the best budget friendly body mists in India.

Fabindia Perfume Oil Review, Price, Buy Online India: Wild Rose and Ylang Ylang

Fabindia Perfume Oil Review 1

For an overall sex appeal, one needs to:

  1. Look good
  2. Feel good
  3. Smell good

While a lot of us focus on point number 1, and some manage to accomplish number 2 as well. But merely a handful of us manage to get to the essential point 3. Those of us who really get all these spot on, are the ones generally considered the hottest of hot! For me, a good perfume is always an investment on feeling good. A strong floral makes me feel fresh on a tiring day at work, while a seductive opium makes me feel powerful on an evening out. A whiff of a good fragrance helps to stir your senses while you are busy in your day job. So having a good perfume handy is always my priority. I love perfume oils, as they are extremely handy, plus they last longer than EDT sprays and body mists. I was always enchanted by perfume oils, but now that has transformed into a love of another kind. I just can’t stop getting enough of them! (The cute little bottles just add to their charm and mystique!)

I popped into a Fabindia store a couple of months ago to buy my sister a birthday gift, and I spotted some cool perfume oils (plus they were darn cheap!) so I just had to try them. I got ourselves (yes, it was her birthday, it was technically for her, but you know how sisters share everything 😉 ) two of them: Wild Rose and Ylang Ylang. Read on for how they fared!

Ingredients and Claims:

Chemistry: Almond oil, grapeseed oil and sesame oil are great media to dissolve perfume ingredients. Cyclomethicone is another solvent, and a viscosity controlling agent.  Vitamin E acetate is another solvent, and also conditions the skin.

Packaging: The perfume oils come packaged in small cylindrical plastic bottles, with a screw cap on top. It comes with a roller ball dispenser, the best thing to dispense perfume oils. The bottle comes packed inside a simple blister pack. Nothing fancy, but basic functional packaging. I have had no trouble of leakage or anything, so I’m totally satisfied with the packaging.

Scent and Longevity:

Wild Rose: The scent is completely true to its name. It smells of beautiful Indian roses (the ‘desi’ gulab that you find growing wildly). It, in fact smells like gulkand (a jam of rose petals, which I totally love to dig). I love the fragrance, though it does seem a bit strong and artificial. When freshly applied, it is extremely strong. Especially if you apply in excess (like me). I generally apply over the pulse points and all over my clothes too. And then I feel like a rose garden! On the package, it is recommended that you try putting it onto a few strands of hair, as that makes the perfume last longer. However, I haven’t tried this yet. It would especially appeal to the people who are not very used to rose scents. To some, this perfume may seem like the scent of incense sticks, but to me, it is pleasant. Not my most favourite rose scent, but yes I like it quite well.

The scent is also quite long lasting. I can still smell it on my clothes at the end of the day, a good 8-9 hours post applying it. On the body, it mellows down after a while, but the original scent still remains. But again, it depends on how the perfume reacts with your skin’s chemistry.

Also, the oil doesn’t show up on clothes, however, I refrain from applying perfume oils to light colored clothes, as the oil stains can remain.

FFS Rating

Scent: 3.25/5 (The scent isn’t very unique, hence I have to deduct)

Longevity: 4/5 (lasts quite long)

Ylang Ylang: This scent is not for the weak hearted! It mentions on the pack that this oil should be used sparingly, and I couldn’t agree more. The scent of this variant is quite strong, but at the same time, it is sweet and calming. To some, it might be very cloying too (scents are a personal thing, after all). If I use it in excess, then I find it overpowering as well. Hence, I use this one with a light hand.

Ylang ylang is generally used in aromatherapy for its soothing properties. I am not very sure how a ylang ylang flower smells like, so I am not sure how true this fragrance is. But I can tell you that the fragrance of this oil is quite a sweet and balmy one. On the skin, it mellows down after a while and you can detect it only when you sniff yourself up close. However, on clothes, this remains strong for upto 6 hours. So you can decide how much to use and where to apply it.

FFS Rating:

Scent: 3.75/5 (it can be extremely overpowering for some noses)

Longevity: 2.5/5 (Doesn’t last more than a couple of hours on the skin)

Price: I had bought these for Rs 200 for 9ml each; however, I just checked their revised prices, and now it has been spiked to Rs 290! That’s quite a jump!!

Where to buy: Fabindia outlets; these are also available at Fabindia online; I somehow could not find Ylang Ylang variant on their website, and I hope they have not discontinued it!

Pros and Cons:

PROs:

  1. Cheap and easily available
  2. Simple fragrances
  3. Easy to carry in purse and tiniest pockets of jeans
  4. Travel friendly packaging with a user-friendly roller ball applicator
  5. Fragrance lasts longer than EDTs and body mists
  6. A little is all you need to smell good

CONs:

  1. Not extremely long lasting, especially Ylang Ylang variant
  2. The fragrances can be too obvious and bothersome for those with sensitive noses

PS: The sudden price hike of 90 rupees does bother me a little!

Final Word: Overall, I am quite satisfied with both these variants. They are pretty simple and straightforward fragrances, no frills. These are amazing gifting options for a friend! I think I will get myself other variants of these (Arabian jasmine, I’m eyeing you next!)

EOS Visibly Soft Coconut Milk Lip Balm Review, Price, Buy Online India

eos Coconut Milk Lip Balm Review

Happy 2016 people! I wish all of you an absolutely amazing year full of beautiful surprises, priceless memories, and yes, a lot of learning! I know I am a bad keeper of promises, as I keep disappearing for weeks on end without posting, but life has been keeping me busy lately. I earned the love of so many readers in 2015, and I am so glad I decided to write this blog back in December 2014. I wish I am able to gather more love in 2016. I have bigger plans for Fashion Food Soul this year, so keep watching this space for updates.

I have managed to hoard a lot of new products on my recent trip to the US and I am overjoyed to be inundated with so much! I had a hard time choosing what to start the review parade with. So I picked one of my favourite purchases this time, EOS lip balm sphere! I already had one EOS lip balm with me (Pomegranate Raspberry, read full review here) and I was pretty fond of it, but then it went rancid and I had to stop using it. This range is different from the regular EOS lip balms, as this belongs to the Visibly Soft line. More on this below.

Product Description and Claims: Get noticed with visibly softer lips. Nourish your lips with the delicious flavor of coconut milk.

eos Visibly Soft Lip Balm, enriched with natural conditioning oils, moisturizing shea butter and antioxidant vitamins C & E, nourishes for immediately softer, more beautiful lips.

  • 99% natural
  • Long-lasting moisture for immediately softer, more beautiful lips
  • Shea butter & vitamins C & E
  • Smoothes on clear
  • Precisely glides on lips
  • Twist-off top
  • Petrolatum-free
  • Paraben-free
  • Gluten-free
  • Phthalate-free
  • 25 oz

Ingredients and Chemistry: I had to get rid of the packaging, so here are the ingredients from EOS website

Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Beeswax/Cera Alba (Cire d’abeille)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Natural Flavor, Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate, Sodium Isostearoyl Lactylate, Water, Sodium Hyaluronate, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract, Tocopherol, Ascorbyl Palmitate

So what differentiates the Visibly Soft line from the regular line of EOS lip balms? Let’s check out the ingredients of the regular line lip balms:

Olea Europaea (Olive) Fruit Oil*, Beeswax/Cera Alba (Cire D’abeille)*, Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil*, Simmondsia Chinensis (Jojoba) Seed Oil*, Natural Flavor (Aroma), Butyrospermum Parkii (Shea Butter)*, Stevia Rebaudiana Leaf/Stem Extract*, Punica Granatum (Pomegranate) Seed Oil*, Tocopherol, Helianthus Annuus (Sunflower) Seed Oil*, Rubus Idaeus (Raspberry) Leaf Extract*, Linalool**. *Organic. **Component of Natural Flavor. Certified Organic by Oregon Tilth.

The highlighted ingredients are the ones where the difference lies.

The Visibly Soft range promises an immediate softness, whereas the regular range just promises moisture and smoothness.

While most ingredients remain consistent on both the product types, we can see some additional ingredients in the Visibly Soft lip balm, which are

Polyglyceryl-3 Diisostearate: an emollient, that helps soften the skin

Sodium Isostearoyl Lactylate: another moisturizing ingredient

Water: to dissolve the water soluble ingredients in the formula

Sodium Hyaluronate: a strong moisturizing agent that enhances suppleness and reduces fine lines

Ascorbyl Palmitate: a moisturizing form of vitamin C

The additional ingredients in this line are technically related to higher immediate moisturization. Let’s see how it fared on the live guinea pig (read: me! 🙂 )

Packaging: EOS is popular for its unconventional packaging. A colleague of mine once asked me what this was, while this lip balm was resting on my workstation. I said, “Yeah, that a lip balm.” He said, “What? It’s a bomb!” Hehehe. You get it. It does get you some attention! The lip balm comes in an egg shape, secured in a screw-top lid. If I could, I would award it as one of the cutest packaged products ever!

Color and Scent: This lip balm is slightly yellower in appearance compared to the regular eos lip balm I had. However, on lips it goes on completely clear. Like other eos lip balms, this is also sweet in taste (I always give extra points for this!) The fragrance is quite true to its name, and I find it quite nice. It doesn’t last for more than a couple of minutes though . I feel it is much better than the fragrance of pomegranate one, as I found that one a bit odd. This one does remind me of coconut milk, and has an extra hint of bubblegummy sweetness to it.

Texture and Effectiveness: The texture is quite light-weight. It does not feel waxy or odd on the lips. In fact, it sits very comfortable on them. It does not feel cloying or heavy at all. I quite like the feeling it gives, so it gets all the points for the texture. As far as the efficacy goes, it does provide instant hydration to the lips. It has been some time since I last used the regular pomegranate one, so I cannot compare the two formulations with a 100% certainty, however, this new line does feel more moisturizing to me than the older EOS variant that I have used. To an extent, it does fulfil the claim of giving us visibly soft lips, but I can’t say that it is the most amazing lip balm that I have ever used (I still love Baby Lips, Lotus, and my new love, Lush Honey Trap – wait for its review!). However, EOS Coconut Milk is one of the better lip balms I have used till date, plus I am always partial to brands that have innovative packaging and good ingredients, so I’ll say I am happy with this product!

Also, it did moisturize my lips to an extent when they were badly chapped, and it did prevent them from drying out further, so I’m overall quite satisfied with it. I find it fine even for overnight use, but I always prefer something highly waxy at night, so it is not my first choice for keeping on my bedside table.

FFS Rating: 4.5/5

Price: I got it for $3 in the US. In India, it sells for anywhere between Rs 450 – 600 on online portals

Where to Buy: It is easily available in the US across supermarkets and ULTA. In India, you can buy it online on Flipkart.

PROs and CONs:

PROs:

  1. Effectively moisturizes lips
  2. Prevents further drying of lips when they are chapped
  3. Does live up to the claim of visibly soft, but to a certain extent only
  4. Is not waxy or uncomfortable
  5. Sweet taste, and pleasant to the nose!
  6. Cute packaging
  7. EOS is a celebrity favourite, so me likey!!
  8. Is all natural, free of chemicals, preservatives, gluten. A carefully formulated product.

CONs:

  1. Availability issues in India. You can only buy it online. Come on EOS! You need to launch yourself in India!
  2. It is much more expensive in India. While it retails for a mere $3-4 in the US, here we have to shell out almost twice or thrice to lay our hands on EOS products
  3. Being all natural, the product can have a tendency to get rancid, as they don’t use preservatives

Final Word: You need to have at least one EOS in your lifetime. It is a good product, and the fun factor is high. I recommend it.

8 Essential Items for Winters for Men and Women + FFS Turns 1!

Untitled

Time flies. Life changes. People come and go, situations change, and we move on. But I have realized that all things happen for a good reason. Every single thing that happens in our lives moulds us and makes us who we are. I have come to believe in this theory even more firmly over the last one year.

And, today happens to be the first anniversary of Fashion Food Soul! I have been pretty irresponsible, being irregular with my posts, but I have been travelling for work for the last month, making it quite difficult to sit down and write my heart out. But 2nd December is special, so I just had to write this!

This anniversary is an opportunity to thank the most important people in my life: my readers. I would like to thank all of you, who have stuck with me for the last one year. It warms my heart to see people liking and appreciating my posts, coming up to me and telling me they loved something or would like to read something. Fashion Food Soul has given me so much! I discovered the writer and the explorer within me this year. This blog gives me the courage to be a different person. And I can’t thank my readers enough for the love.

So today, I bring to you the list of my winter handbag essentials, or rather, a checklist of items that you must have with you these winters. I had been meaning to do this post for a long time. Travelling makes you realize the importance of keeping essentials handy. So I am trying to compile a list of the most important things that one needs to absolutely have with them in winters. I am trying to make this list unisex, as I am blessed to have a lot of men who read my posts 🙂

Winters are the time to keep warm, dry, cozy, and moisturized. This list would help you achieve all these:

  1. Lip balm

The most important thing in my bag is a variety of lip balms. Call me an addict or whatever, but one can’t do without these! Especially in winters when the chilly winds leave your lips dry as parchment. A basic lip balm can save you from painful, bleeding lips. Plus, applying balm also prevents you from biting your dry lips, and excessive licking which make the lips worse.

I recommend:

For men: Nivea Essential Care, Vaseline

For women: Lotus Lip Therapy, Lush Honey Trap Lip Balm (review coming soon!), EOS Lip Balm SphereMaybelline Baby Lips

  1. Gloves

Cold extremities are my worst woes in winters. I always keep a pair of gloves in my bag for the worst wintery days. Plus, the best things to have happened to folks like me (who are forever complaining about cold hands) are the touch-screen gloves! These let you handle your phones without taking off the gloves, so both, your fingers as well as your phone can be thankful to them!

  1. Sunglasses

Shades are essential throughout the year, but during winters, the sun can still be harsh on the eyes, especially if you are out for long hours. Having sunglasses in the bag is an absolute must.

  1. Cap/beanie

The first thing I bought on my current trip was a cap, as I had forgotten to bring one from home, and I was frozen to death on the first night when I stepped out! Since then, it hasn’t left my bag. If you’re not wearing a hooded jacket, these can be lifesavers on cold nights and foggy mornings.

  1. All-purpose cream/hand cream

It is not uncommon to find your freshly moisturized skin becoming rough and dry after stepping out in the cold. Keeping a tube of your favorite cream or a travel pack of a hand and body lotion is highly recommended, as you can use it to moisturize dry hands, any dry spots on your face, or help soothe dry elbows.

I recommend:

For men and women: Neutrogena Hand CreamNivea Creme

  1. High energy food

Winters suck away energy as our bodies struggle to keep warm. It is very easy to feel tired and sluggish. To fight hunger pangs, a high calorie food item must be stashed close enough to be eaten. I always try to keep some granola bars, chocolates and candy in my bag for when hunger strikes (which does happen quite often!).

  1. Hair serum

This one is for the ladies! Winters also mean excessively charged hair, and uncontrolled fly-aways. While I always try to put some hair serum every morning, it is a good idea to keep a small pack in your handbag for days when your hair is extra stubborn and wouldn’t settle down.

  1. Basic painkiller and allergy medicine

Being prepared for an unforeseen headache, or a bout of sneezing (thanks to the cold winds) can never be a bad idea. A strip of paracetamol and some anti-histamines in your travel bag can help you or a friend on a not-so-good day.

I hope you find my list useful! Travelling teaches us a lot. It has taught me how to pack my handbag, apart from a lot of other things!

As FFS turns 1, I hope it continues to help my readers in making informed choices about products before buying them, in helping them be a bit more fashionable than they already are, while it also helps me become a better writer! I really feel blessed today to have all of you as my readers 🙂

Budget Beauty Diaries: Make-up Multi-taskers

Untitled

The cold, autumn rain yesterday evening brought a smile to my face. It brought me hope of cooler mornings, and longer nights. I love autumn rains. But now, I can’t wait for winters to set in and fog my windows, freeze my nose, and make life a little laidback! I’m a winter person, through and through. For me, life begins in October (when I’m no longer sweating hard), and almost ends every March, when temperature begins to soar. Then, it is an unending wait for winter. I find a soothing comfort in the chill, as it makes you appreciate a lot of things that we take for granted otherwise: the warmth of a home, of a hot cup of coffee, and of the warm breath that fills up our lungs.

Also, it is only in winters that I actually end up using most of my makeup, because I’m the kind of person who prefers to keep it extremely light and simple in summers, with my makeup comprising nothing more than eyeliner and kajal, apart from a lip gloss (which, more often, gets replaced by a lip balm). But winters give me the opportunity to explore more: I’m more adventurous with blushes, eye shadows and highlighters, mostly because I know it won’t fade away with sweat (did I tell you that I travel by public transport?), or destroyed in dusty winds.

I’m also the type of girl who likes to find multiple purposes in everything I us (no, I really don’t mean to say that I use chairs for sitting, as well as dumping a lot of clothes! Well, that is kinda true, though 🙂 ) Here is a list of my favourite makeup multitaskers: products that work in ways more than one, thus being bang for your buck.

  1. Lipstick as Blush

I swear by this. Just find yourself a beautiful shade of lipstick in pink, peach, or coral. Do make sure that the lipstick is the creamy variety and not matte. Dab a bit of lipstick on the back of your hand, and use your fingers to work it up on the apples of your cheek. Nobody can tell if it’s a real blush or not!

  1. Foundation as Concealer

If you don’t have a proper concealer to hide those blemishes, dark circles, or spots, your regular foundation can come to your rescue. What I personally prefer to do is dot it away on the area, and let it dry for a few moments before blending it. This way, it is already a bit thicker in consistency, and would cover better.

  1. Eyeshadow as Bronzer

A bronze/gold/copper eyeshadow can work more than an eyeshadow. Mix up a hint of the product with some cream and apply on your cheeks, jawbone and forehead. You can also use a large makeup brush, and swipe down gently on these areas. Just make sure not to use a heavy hand, and keep it really subtle.

  1. Foundation as Nude Lipstick

Not able to find the perfect nude lipstick? Have to attend a party and can’t do without the heavy-eyes-nude-lips combination? Then don’t fret. Exfoliate your lips, moisturize lightly, and put your regular foundation on. When it sets, finish with a lip gloss, or heck, even lip balm would do. You can say bye-bye to the thought of buying a nude lipstick.

  1. Baby Powder as Dry Shampoo

One beauty hack every girl must know is how to handle those lazy mornings when you just don’t have the courage to shampoo your hair. I’m one of those lazy girls, especially in winters when I love to sleep a few more minutes than go shower, shampoo and then blow dry as well. So, what to do? Baby powder! Just open up the hair roots, sprinkle some baby powder, and tousle to spread it well. Post some brushing, you look fresh and clean!

  1. Mascara as Eyeliner

Out of eyeliner? Or you don’t have the cash to splurge on a liner and a mascara, both? Then go ahead and buy just the mascara. Dip your old eyeliner brush into the mascara, and use just like a liquid/cream eyeliner! This would generally stay quite long, as mascara is meant to survive long hours on the eyelashes.

  1. Blush as Eyeshadow

Almost a vice versa of point 3. Here, you use a pink/coral/peach/brown blush as an eyeshadow! Use a powder blush with your spongy eyeshadow sticks. Use a creamy blush just like a creamy eyeshadow. Simple!

  1. Vaseline/body lotion as Makeup Remover

I have done a detailed post on this topic, which you can read here. Vaseline, and any body lotion, work equally well as makeup removers. Spread it on your skin, and use a cotton pad to get rid of the grease. No frills, no extra expenses.

  1. Vaseline as Highlighter

If you don’t know how to obtain a glowing face without too much effort, then just apply a tiny bit of Vaseline petroleum jelly to your cheeks, above the brow bone, and the bridge of your nose. This helps to provide a soft dewy glow to the face. However, be careful, lest you end up using too much and are left with a sticky face!

  1. Handcream as Anti-frizz

Hand creams are designed to be less greasy than other creams. So, what to do to tame those fly-aways when no amount of brushing and combing helps? A tiny dab of hand cream helps those flying strands settle.

Do drop me a line if you have any more suggestions to enhance this list! I would love to learn some more ways in which I can use my makeup 🙂
